The Red Door Project of Central Texas MCC serves the HIV population of Waco and the surrounding area in three ways: through the Red Door Pantry, the HIV support groups, and McCARES.

RED DOOR PANTRY

The Red Door Pantry is the only food pantry dedicated to the HIV population in all McLennan County.

The Pantry, located at 1601 Clay Ave. and open on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays between 2:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m., is available for anyone who can show any evidence of HIV status. Call 254-752-5331 for more information.

How can you help? It’s easy! If you would like to support the Red Door Pantrywith a financial donation, click on the “Red Door Pantry” button on our website’s “Donate” page.

Or if you prefer, you can make your donation by check made payable to “Central Texas MCC” with “Red Door Pantry” in the memo. Mail it to:

We purchase the groceries and distribute them to clients. Or you can start your own food drive! Here are some popular food pantry items:

  • Boxed cereal
  • Canned tuna, vienna sausage, or canned salmon
  • Saltine crackers, instant potatoes, macaroni & cheese, rice, or spaghetti
  • Hamburger Helper and other boxed dinners, canned chili, or canned stew
  • Peanut butter, jelly, pickles, mustard, ketchup, or barbeque sauce
  • Jiffy cornbread mix or vegetable oil
  • Canned vegetables

HIV SUPPORT GROUPS

In addition to the Red Door Pantry, we provide space for two peer support groups.  One of them meets at 6:00 p.m. on the third Thursday of every month.  It’s a support group for persons living with HIV, as well as their friends and family members.  The evening begins with a hot, home-cooked meal at 6:00 p.m., followed by the support group, which lasts from 6:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m.

We also host a support group for HIV+ women on the first Saturday of each month at 11:00 a.m. Following the meeting, a delicious and healthy home-cooked lunch is served up.

Although the groups have facilitators, the primary support comes from the sharing of stories between group members.

McCARES

Formerly, a non-profit charity serving the HIV community of Waco and the surrounding area, McCARES now operates as a ministry of Central Texas MCC.  It provides emergency funding for people who are HIV+, at the recommendation of their caseworker.  The idea is to catch the people who are slipping through the cracks of HIV services.  It helps out with medication, utilities, dental work, eyeglasses, etc.  If you would like to support McCARES with a financial donation, click on the “McCARES” button on our website’s “Donate” page.
